Glide In To Relaxation
The residents of the Villas tend to be very friendly and will often share a hot grill or help you finish a bottle of wine. The kids always seem to find friends within the Villas and the location next to the Club, with the Club pool, playground, and tennis courts seems to add more friends. Kids enjoy a level of freedom to move about the island that they typically do not have at home.
Vacation on BHI begins the moment you board the passenger only ferry for the 20-minute scenic ride over to the island. After more than a decade of traveling to and from the island on the ferry, I still love standing on the forward deck and letting the sun and wind tell me that it is time to shift into a slower more relaxed pace of life.
Slow Ride . . . Take It Easy
There are no cars on BHI. Travel on the island is by golf cart, bicycle or people power. Villa 20 is equipped with two carts - a large 6-passenger golf cart, equipped with a cover and side panels for protection from the elements and a 4-passenger, also with cover. The 6 was new in 2015 the 4 is new in 2022, both are quick to help ease your transition into turtle time.
The golf cart garage is on the ground level, along with the outdoor protected hot and cold water shower with changing area, and washer and dryer. We have plenty of beach chairs, beach umbrella, an array of beach toys, corn hole, and bikes, so ask if we have it before you load it and lug it to the island. We expect guests to spray things off with fresh water before you put it back in the garage (as you would if it were yours) to make sure the next guests get to enjoy it like you did. There is a new gas grill with built in light for your use on a newly constructed ground level deck. We even have outdoor speakers strategically placed for music to cook or shower by.

We added a ground level deck to our Villa to add living space and a break from the sound of pounding waves. This shade deck substantially expands the living space and includes a porch swing hung by springs and hinges for an extra quiet and smooth ride. We also have a baby swing for the wee ones. There are rocking chairs and Adirondacks there to provide a comfortable place to relax and get out of the heat, and watch the turtles and birds in the lagoon.
Two Carts - Twice the Fun!
When you don't need the 6-Passenger cart to move the group or you are headed in two different directions, you can take the 4-Passenger cart. Both have fold down windshields to feel the breeze or dry your hair island style, and both have rear fold down seats to provide easy chair carry. But given the location of Villa 20, across the street from the beach and next to the Club, you may go days without driving at all.
When you eat too much you can switch from electric cart to peddle power. We have an ever changing assortment of beach bikes and scooters.
Indoor Outdoor Living In Turtle Time
The next level up is the main living level in the Villa. Floors on the main level are ceramic tile with area rugs and the bedrooms and loft are carpeted. Ceilings are vaulted to open the space. The baths have been completely renovated and offer substantial upgrade from original. The home has central air conditioning and heat. The main level has an outdoor deck that serves as the entrance to the villa. We've removed the original front door to provide more wall space in the living room and installed a double swing door entry.
There’s another outdoor deck off the upstairs sleeping loft that offers an unbelievable ocean view and rocking chairs to sit and enjoy your morning coffee, watch sunsets, or star gaze. BHI is so dark at night you will see stars you haven’t seen in years. We are so close to the water that on waveless days you can even see the dolphins swim along the shore.

Toes in the Sand
There are beach chairs enough for everybody to carry across the street to enjoy the beach and cornhole to play in the yard or the beach. There are beach umbrellas and plenty of beach toys and buckets to collect shells in.

Curl Up With A Good Book Or Watch A Movie . . .
Villa 20 is a cozy, light and bright beach vacation home. At 1,200 square feet it is a little house that lives big. Most walls are filled with windows and when combined with vaulted ceilings in the guest room, kitchen and main living area it lives larger than it is.
The living room is equipped with sofas arranged for easy conversation or television viewing and a leather reading chair. The HD flat screen TV with Blu-ray player, chrome cast and DVD collection were added for those few hours that you would rather be inside than out. We are continuously building our DVD collection and the house is filled with good books. Check the baskets under the table for books and games. Games and puzzles are in the kitchen. The television stand also contains a stereo with radio and CD player. The stereo is Bluetooth enabled to enable you to cast your favorite music from your device. Outside speakers allow you to listen to music while enjoying the lower deck. We recently added Chromecast to enable you to cast from your device to use Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime or whatever you use at home or on the road.

Fully Equipped Kitchen
Just off the main living area is the kitchen/dining area. It's been fully renovated and offers a revised family friendly layout. The kitchen has everything you need to fix dinner at home if you desire. We added new everyday china, silverware and glassware. There's also a complete set of unbreakables in case your crew works better with those. The new kitchen includes a coffee bar and charging station along with all new high-end appliances.
Master Bedroom - King Size Bed - Fully Renovated Master Bath
Immediately off the main living area is the Master bedroom. It was painted and new Pottery Barn linens added in 2018. There is a king size bed in the master bedroom. The view from the master is to the lagoon and toward the golf course. The master bedroom is also equipped with a ceiling fan, two closets, a dresser, and a flat screen HDTV smart TV.
The master bath was recently renovated and includes a more open design. We removed the standard shower surround and much of the divider wall and installed a tile and glass surround with raised shower head. We installed sound deadening in the walls between rooms, installed new cabinetry with granite top and gave the room a fresh look. Even included the comfort height toilet! Original hollow and flat doors have been replaced throughout the villa with solid paneled doors with new hardware and carpeting has been replaced with plank look ceramic tile.

Guest Bedroom - Queen Size Bed - Fully Renovated Full Bath
The Guest bedroom has a vaulted ceiling and views of the ocean from the two windows on the front of the house. There is a queen size bed, new mattress and foundation, new Pottery Bard bedding, two closets and a dresser to hold the few things you need for a beach vacation. A ceiling fan keeps the air moving. The guest room opens to the guest bath.
Hallway Bath Off Kitchen
Across from the kitchen is a full bath that opens to the hallway and the guest bedroom. This bathroom has been fully renovated. We removed the original fiberglass shower surround and replaced it with a full height tile shower/bathtub, granite countertop, and fresh look.
Sleeping Loft - 2 Twin Beds And Half Bath
Overlooking the main living area is a sitting area in the front of the loft. The view from the loft chairs is out to the lagoon in the back yard. Just off this sitting area is an upstairs deck with rocking chairs and side table. This is a favorite spot for morning coffee, with views of south beach, “Old Baldy” to the north, and the 18th fairway to the northeast. At night the star view is incredible. Because Bald Head is a sea turtle nesting island and well offshore and away from the mainland lights, it tends to be very dark at night on Bald Head. You may see stars that you have not seen for years at home. The serenity of the night sky is disturbed only briefly by the flash of the Oak Island Lighthouse. We have added comfortable curved back rocking chairs up there for star gazing and wine drinking at sunset.
Outdoors On BHI Is Where It's At . . .
But the real reason to come to BHI is not inside Villa 20, it is the outdoors. The house sits in the best part of the South Beach environment and is situated to take advantage of the location.
There are decks on all three living levels of the house. We added a shady ground level wrap around deck with benches and hung a porch swing and added rocking and Adirondack chairs to relax it. There is also a sun-filled deck off the main living area and kitchen to the rear of the house.
From there you look onto the lagoon and beyond to the 18th fairway. The lagoon is filled with turtles, fish and an occasional visiting alligator. You’ll see cranes, Great Blue herons, ibis, egrets and our favorite - the diving cormorants. Like penguins, these birds will swim the length of the lagoon underwater fishing for their dinner. We have put some Adirondack chairs on that deck as well.

Walk to the beach
The view from the upper deck out front is across the street to South Beach. At high tide we are approximately 400-feet from water's edge. Hard to show in pictures just how close we are to the water but it is close enough that on flat water days you can see dolphins jump along the shore. It is a 2 minute walk across the street to the beach entrance. We easily walk to the beach carrying our chair, umbrella, and beach bag – and run home all day for bathroom and beverage breaks.
Find seclusion on East Beach
We always walk to the beach but you can certainly take the golf cart and park it over there if you so choose. In the off season you will likely be the only ones on the beach in front of the house. During peak season it is not unusual to only have 5 to 10 families there at any one time. If you are more comfortable with larger groups you can drive the short cart distance to the east end of South Beach. If you want total seclusion, go to the north end of East Beach. This picture was taken from a point that is a 10 minute walk on East Beach at the peak of the summer season, from the north looking back toward the Cape Fear Point.
Bald Head Island Golf Club
With rental of Villa 20 comes an opportunity to purchase temporary membership to world class Bald Head Island Club with golf, pool, tennis, croquet, fitness center, fine and casual dining - even sand volleyball and a playground for the kids. This is all a short walk from Villa 20 or from our beach access 13. The club offers resort amenities and is a short walk from the house. We have registered to offer our guests temporary membership and will provide you with the details necessary to obtain membership for your family.
The Shoals Beach Club is another option for Villa 20 guests
Any of the beach access points toward the east end of South Bald Head Wynd will provide you with more company than you will have in front of the Villas. Parking at the Shoals Club and using our membership to get towels, chairs and umbrella pretty much will assure you of seeing more people. Without a membership you can park at beach access 39 and walk to the right to visit the point. We have registered to enable our guests to obtain membership and will provide you with the details of how to obtain it for your family.
10,000 Acres of sea marsh changes colors all day long
The great thing about beach life on an island is you get to pick your surf conditions. If the wind is coming from the south and surf is up on South Beach and you were hoping to take the baby in for a calm swim - no problem - you just head over to East Beach and it will be flat. If you want to boogie board on the waves you just stay right there on South Beach.
If the surf is rough all over (seldom the case) it might be a good day to go explore the marsh on the north side of the island or swim in a pool at one of the clubs. There are hiking trails for the landlubbers and canoe and kayak rentals for the water explorers.

Sunsets on BHI are an Event
At the end of the day you have several great sunset options.
You can pour yourself a drink and stay right on the upstairs deck or walk across the street to plant your feet in the sand. Or you can jump in the cart, run over to West Beach and watch the sun go down over the Cape Fear River If you have not seen dolphins all day on South Beach, this is also a good time to catch them going up the river.
